Cask Ale of the Year 2021 – Best

This January we were absolutely delighted to be announced as ‘Cask Ale of the Year 2021’ on The Pellicle Podcast for our ‘Best’ classic British bitter.

The podcast is co-founded and hosted by Matthew Curtis, writer of Modern British Beer and photographer. We are always so proud to be among stellar company and we feel especially proud this time listening to the wonderful things Matthew had to say about our beer. Throughout the podcast, Matthew talks about his favourite beers of 2021, whilst looking back at the year. He also named his favourite pubs of the year, it is a joy to listen to and we would recommend for beer lovers everywhere.
“At the time I fancied something a little on the maltier side, I plumped for a pint of Best, from Saltaire in Yorkshire and I took that beer up to the roof and sat on the terrace where my friends were, and they were all drinking these hazy hoppy pale beers and there was I with my pint of bitter.
Nut brown in the glass, maybe a little bit of red glinting as the sun hit the edges and all of them going “what’s that?” and with a big smile on my face I said “oh I’ve got a pint of Saltaire Best” and it was absolutely spectacular. It had that perfect balance of malt sweetness to snappy peppery English hops and it went down incredibly quickly to the point where I immediately had to have another pint, which is, as you know the mark of a really good beer”.
Best Cask Ale
Matthew took us right back to the pub experience in 2021, one which we can all relate to with his reference to April last year, “when you’re at a great pub with some close friends, with beer like that, that’s the kind of moment I live for". A huge congratulations and shout out to our whole production team for creating such a successful beer, but especially Ben, our production manager, who created the original recipe.
